The Latest in Penis Enlargement – Penis Transplant Completed Successfully

Penis Transplant

IN March of 2015 a South African university made headlines when it announced that doctors there had completed the world’s first successful penis transplant. According to the press release issued by the University of Stellenbosch, the surgery was completed in December of 2014 after a nine-hour operation. News has send shock waves throughout the world and now many men are wondering if this is the dawn of a new age for penis enlargement.

Penile Surgery – Current Issues and Future Hope

Surgery for penis enlargement isn’t new. There are now a handful of surgeons who can and do offer the service for men who want to enlarge their penis. This surgery does carry significant dangers, including problems with erectile function as well as problems with urination and overall sensitivity. In spite of these risks, penile enlargement surgery – called phalloplasty – remains on the rise and as techniques become more streamlined many experts believe they will become increasingly common and eventually more affordable.

Penis transplants, on the other hand, are a completely different issue. First, they are reserved for men who have lost most or all of their penis as the result of some sort of trauma. The first surgery was done in a military hospital in Guangzhou, China for a patient who had lost part of his penis in an accident. Physically the surgery was a success but the man and his wife reported severe psychological trauma as a result of the surgery and asked for it to be reversed two weeks later. The case also raised a number of questions from other professionals involving the ethics of the surgery and its ultimate reversal.

The operation that took place most recently is only the second of its kind and is the first to be deemed a success by both the medical team and the patient. The surgery was performed on an unnamed 21-year old man after his penis was amputated due to a botched circumcision. Circumcisions are common for young men in the region as they are a rite of passage many men go through in their late teens. Unfortunately, many of these circumcisions are done by people with little or no medical training and health problems associated with them are fairly common in the area.

As of March 13, 2015 the patient reported that his new penis was working fine and that he had no problems. He confirmed he was able to urinate, achieve an erection, achieve orgasm and ejaculate but that there was diminished sensitivity. Doctors and other medical professionals agree this is a resounding success and that the sensitivity issue is to be expected. They are quick to point out that the patient’s sensitivity should return fully within a few years and there’s no doubt this will be a case closely followed for years to come.

This success doesn’t really imply penis transplants for the purposes of enlargement are going to become common any time soon. First there are the formidable medical challenges to performing the operation as well as the formidable task of finding a donor. Few details were released about the donor in this case, though doctors did report the donor was the same race as the patient and that they had consulted with the donor’s surviving family in order to obtain consent for this specific operation.

But the procedures used in this type of surgery may help to improve surgical penis enlargement options down the road. In this regard, it could indeed herald a new age of penis enlargement options for surgery. Most of all, it drives home the reason why this kind of surgery is so important and shouldn’t be seen as simply cosmetic or self-indulgent. For men in need, phalloplasty options can be their best hope for a new chance at life.
